DISPATCH FROM THE MARKETS — Should the prediction markets prove prophetic, Elon Musk will one day command a fortune so staggering that every preceding billionaire will appear, by comparison, a man of modest means. Kalshi's exchange currently prices the probability of Musk crossing the trillion-dollar threshold at 76 percent — three chances in four that history records a first. At present, Musk's net worth oscillates between $300 billion and $400 billion, itself a figure without precedent in the annals of recorded wealth. The gap to a trillion remains enormous — roughly three times his current haul — yet prediction markets appear to regard the trajectory of his enterprises, chiefly Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, as compelling enough to warrant strong confidence. Market consensus is, in short, betting on compounding over time. What could spoil the ledger? A protracted regulatory assault on Tesla, a spectacular SpaceX failure, or a bruising unwinding of his political entanglements could each arrest the ascent.
